    • ONTARIO TRAIN SHOWS, OPEN HOUSES AND MEETS
Those of us who don't live in Ontario don't like to admit it, but there are some things we envy about that province. One of them is the large number of train shows that occur throughout the year. If you live there, how can you possibly keep track of them all? If that's your problem, Ian McIntosh has a solution; he has created the Ontario Train Shows, Open Houses and Meets webpage, which lists over 80 shows, meets and club meetings in 2010. You can find it at

(Those addresses both work. So does "home.eol.ca/~ianmc/shows" then "2010".)

    Heritage Toronto Walks
    "Marlborough to Summerhill"
The diverse Marlborough - Summerhill area, which includes everything from grand estates to a city reservoir, has been largely shaped by the 1884 Canadian Pacific Railway line. This busy freight line, along with the beautifully restored North Toronto Station, continues to dominate the area.
  • Led by: Derek Boles and Ed Freeman
  • Starting at: Parkette on southeast corner of Avenue Road and MacPherson Avenue.
  • Ending at: Summerhill Subway Station at Yonge Street and Shaftesbury Avenue.
  • Length: Approximately 2 hours.
  • Focus: Historical, architectural.
  • Difficulty: Stairs, slopes and rough ground.
  • Although the walk is not exclusively geared towards railways there is much of rail interest since the route follows the CPR North Toronto Sub. for over a kilometre.
The Summerhill area is one of Toronto's most diverse and interesting neighbourhoods and the Canadian Pacific Railway had a lot to do with its development over the years. At various times, the neighbourhood has included grand estates, workers' cottages, middle class homes, light-to-medium industry, railway yards, hotels, recreation and the city's principal reservoir. Although the area is still bisected by one of the busiest railway freight lines in Canada, Summerhill now features upscale condominiums and high-end retail arrayed along Yonge Street. The neighbourhood is anchored by the beautifully restored North Toronto Station, which has received several awards for its adaptive reuse of a heritage structure.
